THE STAINED GLASS
The magnificent East Window has been described as a work of highest art, and was done by Charles Earner Kempe, a highly acclaimed ecclesiastical designer. It depicts all the major events in the life of Christ, with the Old Testament prophets who foretold them and the four evangelists who recorded them.
It consists of seven large lights, fifteen feet high, surmounted by a head of decorated tracery. Describing the epitome of our Lord's life, there is the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the Nativity, the Visit of the Magi, the Presentation in the Temple, the Flight into Egypt, Crucifixion. the Burial, and the Resurrection. The prophets shown were Moses, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zechariah, Micah, Hosea, and Malachi.
The inscription at the bottom of the window indicates that it was placed as a memorial to the family of Lewis Bliss in 1880.
All the remaining glass in the church was the work of the English Firm of Clayton and Bell, and was installed when the church was built. The West window, consisting of three large lights, depicts the Transfiguration of our Lord. The window at the end of the North aisle portrays the two miracles connected with the Apostolic Ministry: The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, and the Feeding of the Five Thousand.
The aisle windows on the north wall and south wall show the Apostles, each identified by the appropriate symbols. From the southeast corner (All Saint's Chapel) clockwise, they are: St. Matthew, St. Thomas, St. James the Less, St. Simon, St. Jude, St. Matthias(who replaced Judas) St. Paul (who, strictly speaking, cannot be numbered among the twelve) St. Peter, St. Andrew, St. James the Greater, St. John, St Philip, and St. Bartholomew. All, with the exception of two, were placed as memorials.
In the Baptistry is a beautiful triple light window, the center of which is filled with a representation of the Good Samaritan. The light on the right shows Christ as the Good Samaritan, while the left light shows Christ blessing the little children. The small window in the northeast corner shows our Lord placing a child in the midst of his followers, with the text at the bottom: "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, Ye shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven" These windows were also memorial gifts.
